Date September 26 – December 13

Through the lens of science-fiction capitalism, Regina de Miguel’s new film commission centralizes narratives of exploration and desire in future, seemingly uninhabited, landscapes. The title reflects the structure and conceptual core of the film, which unfolds in three parts. Living in what Regina calls “the in-between” during a plague, the film’s protagonist finds herself stranded on the terraformed planet Tornus while awaiting assignment for a new mission. In this desolate world, swamps are an interface connecting to voices from another time. Regina chose to incorporate the voices of “women whose final acts reveal a failure of the collective: a lack of listening, a lack of attention,” which, for the artist, are tied to centuries of planetary violence and the possibility of resistance through empathy and art.

Commissioned by the Toronto Biennial of Art, co-presented with Gallery TPW, and made possible with the generous support of Catapulta, Acción Cultural Española, the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern, and the Women Leading Initiative. The artist wishes to acknowledge the support of the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern.

Bio

Regina de Miguel

Regina de Miguel is a filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist whose work explores how imaginaries, violence, and knowledge are produced, inherited, and materially grounded in territories understood as geotraumatic sites. Through films, installations, and hybrid projects, she questions the supposed neutrality of scientific images and devices, bringing maps, models, archives, and data visualizations into friction with speculative and narrative strategies. Writing and voice play a structural role, opening fissures in dominant languages and rehearsing alliances between human and non-human agencies. Her work has been shown internationally and is held in collections such as TBA21, Fundación “la Caixa”, and Museo Reina Sofía.
