Sankofa Square

Sankofa Square is at the centre of Toronto’s downtown urban core along Yonge Street, which runs from northern Toronto suburbs through the city to Lake Ontario. Sankofa is a Twi word from the Akan Tribe of Ghana, signifying “go back and get it,” a phrase that encourages learning from the past as we look to the future. The Square is particularly vibrant, surrounded by shops, theatres, restaurants, a university, and a myriad of luminous screens. It is used by community members and organizations for celebrations, events, gatherings, protests, and performances, creating an active space both day and night.
