Born in Kisumu and raised on Treaty 13 land here in Toronto, Irum Chorghay (they/she) is a settler poet of South Asian descent learning to sit with struggle. They have published poems about heartbreak and the city and the Humber River; co-authored essays on gender in girl-bot films and in pre-historic Greek material culture; and proudly co-founded The Decom Post, a youth-led free, print newspaper on Toronto’s local food systems rooted in Land Back. An MA candidate in the Adult Education and Community Development program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, Irum is researching media co-operatives as alternative pathways for communities to own, govern, and steward cultural, economic, and political infrastructures. They are so pleased to join the Toronto Biennial of Art as a School Visits Storyteller and further the TBA’s mission of making contemporary art accessible to everyone.
