Built in 1977 and designed by the German-Canadian architect Eberhard Zeidler (Ontario Place, Queens Quay Terminal, Gladstone Hotel restoration, North York Performing Arts Centre), the Toronto Eaton Centre is a remnant of the Canadian department store chain Eaton’s, founded by Irish-Canadian immigrant Timothy Eaton in the 19th century. The main portion of the complex is bounded by Yonge Street on the east, Queen Street West on the south, Dundas Street West on the north, and to the west by James Street and Trinity Square, and is built over the former Taddle Creek, one of Toronto’s many buried streams. A former site of warehouses and factory buildings, it is now one of the busiest shopping centres in North America welcoming shoppers, commuters and tourists.
