Barbara Fischer is the Executive Director and Chief Curator, Art Museum, and Associate Professor Teaching Stream at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, at the University of Toronto, a position she has held since 2014.  Prior appointments include Director of the Blackwood Gallery (1999-2005) and Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (2005 to 2014), and curatorial positions at the Walter Philips Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario and The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery. In her curatorial work, Fischer focuses on contemporary art and its histories, and has produced critically acclaimed local, national and international touring exhibitions that foreground socially engaged practices in diverse media, with a special focus on conceptual, sculptural, sound and projection-based installations that offer insight into a spectrum of contemporary perceptual, aesthetic and cultural concerns. She received the 2008 Hnatyshyn Award for Curatorial Excellence and the 2022 University of Toronto President’s Impact Award, among other honours.
