September 21 – December 1
El viaje de Yibo [Yibo’s Journey] (2024) is a newly commissioned large-scale textile that continues Angélica’s investigation of blending tradition and experimentation. The introduction of new techniques and complex compositions addresses both her personal life and broader collective histories. Angélica’s work is an abstract representation of the territory from which she hails, and a reflection on collective migration experiences. The work incorporates knots and threads as if they were veins connecting various places, evoking the emotional effects of forced displacement of Indigenous communities, movements triggered by military violence, social inequality, racism, and environmental destruction.
The exhibition also includes three existing textile sculptures: Alma [Soul] (2020), Raxq’ab’ [Dew] (2023), and Nu rach’ulew [My Land] (2022). These sculptures are forms of conversation with landscape painting traditions of her home in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala. Incorporating loom frames used for textile production in the sculptures brings a sense of place to her work, reclaiming the living and affective dimension of weaving tools.
The exhibition includes a new work commissioned by the Toronto Biennial of Art. The presentation is made possible with the generous support of La Nueva Fábrica and the Women Leading Initiative.
