Threatened (Birds in Canada) (2024) is a series of drawings made on recycled materials that presents birds that are currently at risk of extinction in Canada, many of them migratory. The drawings reflect on the complicated symbiosis between migrations of humans and other species within their environments and underscores the pressing issue of bird species under the threat of extinction.

Maria Ezcurra is an artist and educator whose practice embraces an ecofeminist viewpoint, delving into the interplay of clothing, gender construction, and the intricate tapestry of identity and immigration. Her creative output spans sculptures and installations to performances and wearable pieces, all meticulously crafted from everyday materials such as textiles, shoes, and other personal artifacts. Through her transformative process, she unveils the subjective essence and cultural significance of these materials, deconstructing and reconfiguring them to push the boundaries of the physical and emotional aspects of the human form. In doing so, she lays bare the complex web of social relationships that intricately mold our individual identities.

Presented in partnership with MOMENTA Biennale de l’image with the support of CALQ.
