September 21 – December 1

Passing (2022) is an installation of recovered and deconstructed shoes inviting viewers to navigate a space filled with bird silhouettes. Maria juxtaposes these comforting flying figures with deconstructed shoes to symbolize the resilience and vulnerability of migrant populations. Doing so, the artist highlights intricate connections between migration journeys and various aspects of life, including the environment, economy, society, and politics.

Maria Ezcurra is an artist and educator whose practice embraces an ecofeminist viewpoint, delving into the interplay of clothing, gender construction, and the intricate tapestry of identity and immigration. Her creative output spans sculptures and installations to performances and wearable pieces, all meticulously crafted from everyday materials such as textiles, shoes, and other personal artifacts. Through her transformative process, she unveils the subjective essence and cultural significance of these materials, deconstructing and reconfiguring them to push the boundaries of the physical and emotional aspects of the human form. In doing so, she lays bare the complex web of social relationships that intricately mold our individual identities.

Co-presented with MOMENTA Biennale de l’image with the support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec
