A photograph of the Gather Round Singers choir performing. In the foreground, a Black person with curly hair and wearing a orange shirt is seen smiling, holding and waving a large scarf attached to a paddle with a face drawn on it. In the background there are multiple people with multiple ages and abilities singing outwards to a crowd of people. Some are in movement, others are performing ASL, and others are sitting and singing. Many are wearing orange as well.

Jumblies is a Toronto-based organization with a Canada-wide reach that engages in collaborations between professional artists and diverse people and places, mentoring and supporting others to do so as well. Jumblies expands where art happens, who gets to be part of it, what forms it takes and whose stories it tells. This imperative has led them outside of specialized art venues and to place radical inclusion at the core of their work. They say ‘Everyone is welcome!’ and embrace the joys and challenges, social and aesthetic, of meaning or trying to mean it.

The Gather Round Singers is a radically inclusive community choir, made up of singers of mixed ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

The choir upholds core values of access by: avoiding auditions; learning music by ear; providing transportation, healthy food, language interpretation/translation, personal care workers, on-site childcare; using accessible venues, and welcoming new members at any point in the process (sometimes up to and including the day of a performance!). For over a decade, the Gather Round Singers have been a part of Jumblies’ core Toronto projects, performing newly-commissioned works.
