TBA aims to be at the forefront of commissioning works from a diverse range of artists that address vital issues from a perspective grounded in Toronto. To date, TBA has commissioned over 50 new artworks from artists across Canada and the world.
These moment-defining commissioned works carry on the legacy of the Biennial and its supporters, who will be forever linked to the works throughout their lifecycle in exhibitions, catalogues, public and private collections and as permanent installations of public art. In just our first two editions, works commissioned by the Biennial have been acquired by institutions including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Tate Modern and Forge Project, as well as by private international collectors.
Through our commissioning program, artists gain access to paid work opportunities, production assistance, mentorship, career development and international exposure.
The Artist Commissioning Fund gives artists the opportunity to bring their ideas to fruition. Generous supporters of the Fund enable artists to continue to create work that helps to inspire, challenge, and spark conversation on the most urgent issues we face today.
Artists experiences with the Commissioning Program:
- “[I felt] very taken care of and respected as an artist”
- “I was treated with welcoming and creative engagement. I was treated with trust and respect. I felt my ideas [were] received and encouraged.”; and,

- 82% of artists developed new artwork because of the Biennial
- 97% of artists acknowledged that the Biennial made a positive contribution to their work
